A press conference was held September 29, 2014 at the CHU of Poitiers to officially launch the Federation University Hospital (FHU) Transplantation SUPORT (Survival Optimization Organ Transplantation in) created on June 20, 2014.
This is the first French FHU on the thematic of Organ Transplantation. It covers the innovative and ambitious thematic of the improvement of the organ conservation in the context of graft shortage, in order to maximize the chances of success of transplantation and to improve the quality of life of the transplanted patient.
Combining excellence in care, research and teaching
“The future is in the alliance of university hospitals and research organizations!” has proclaimed Alain Claeys, MP and mayor of Poitiers and member of the Supervisory Board of the University Hospital, in the presence of Yves Jean, president of the university of Poitiers, and representatives of the UH of Tours and the UH of Limoges.
“The organ shortage is increasing”
Professor Thierry Hauet, coordinator of the FHU SUPORT, with Professeur Ephrem Salamé and Professor Pierre Marquet, co-coordinators who co-drive the Executif Council, has presented the objectives of the FHU.
“This project responds to a problem of public health because of the great success of the transplantation. There is an increasing indication for transplantation, which induces a shortage of organ” highlight Pr Hauet. “Today, organ that may be transplanted are not used as grafts; the aim of this cooperation is to avoid that.”

Kidney transplantation at first place in France
The clinical activity of transplantation, by the all three University Hospital of Tours, Limoges and Poitiers is at the top 5 in France.
In 2013, 232 transplantations were performed which puts the FHU in first place nationally; 27 heart transplantations have been done (2nd place) and 99 liver transplantations (3rd place). Regarding organ procurment, still in 2013, the three establishments have operated 132 cares.
According to the objectives of the Plan 2012-2016 for Transplantation, the FHU SUPORT will help to increase the number and the quality of grafts and to optimize healthcare provision for the three regions Center, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes. Inter regional collaboration will first focus in harmonization of healthcare which will promote a visibility at the national and international level.
